So this year I’ve been trying to create more family traditions for the girls and I. Be it gardening, Friday movie and pizza night, or many discussions/stories of their daddy.
Well most of them include many teachable moments. What’s a teachable moment you ask? A moment during any activity which you can use to teach your child….is how I define it.
Saturdays we make breakfast together. Not only are we bonding as a family but also the girls are learning an important life skill….cooking. Cooking and all that entails from planning and measuring to knife and fire safety. So many lessons rolled into the glory of making breakfast together.
Now this, mind you, is not as easy as you think. Because you have to learn to let go as a parent. You have to let them learn and make mistakes and…MESSES lots of messes. But then you also teach them that mistakes and accidents happen and how to fix them.
I discovered today that the easiest way for me (aka OCD cooking control freak…okay maybe a little) was to step back and take pictures. Assisted by many cringe worthy moments…deep breathes and whispered prayers the girls made breakfast with only some guidance and lots of supervision.
Here’s a picturementary? of this mornings cooking…
Now that we’ve enjoyed the fruits of our labors comes a lesson in cleaning up 😉
